July 27th
JOHNSON, VT– Vermont Electric Cooperative (VEC) members gave the okay by a wide margin Tuesday to partner with Green Mountain Power in upgrading the transmission line from Lowell to Jay, which will also be used by GMP for the Kingdom Wind Project.
The highly controversial vote, which was widely publicized, resulted in a voter turnout of about 20 percent. Typical votes result in about 8 percent of the membership voting.

DERBY – Derby town officials heard more controversy Monday evening over a telecommunications tower proposed by the Vermont Electric Company (VELCO).
Derby residents Sharon and Mark Tarbox, who live near Derby’s antenna farm at 3557 Nelson Hill Road, expressed concerns about possible health effects from the large tower VELCO wants to install. VELCO officials say the tower will emit a very low amount of emissions, but some residents are concerned over the cumulative emissions from VELCO and other towers as well as from undetermined transmitters that would be put on the tower in the future.
VEC Transmission Upgraded PASSES with 5,340 votes to 1,379 votes.
Hydro Quebec approval to purchase power passes 5,970 to 700.
Bylaw Amendment to allow payback to customers of equity passes 5,572 to 991.
Carol Maroney wins VEC board seat.

Shooting a score of 76 were the teams of Marcy Mastin and Kim Haley of Orleans Country Club and Barb Shiffler and Carla Desnoyers of Williston and Champlain. Horace Archer, PGA pro on Thursday, July 21st at Orleans Country Club, declared the two teams co-winners of the tournament. The event was the Ladies Invitational Summer Medley, which attracted golfers from this area and other parts of Vermont. The format consisted of six holes each of Best Ball, Scramble, and Scotch Ball. Net winners were Irene Farrar and Judy Martel of Orleans coming in with a 60.

Williams–– Kenneth D., Sr., 86, of Barton, VT, passed away July 21, 2011 in Barton. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
