NEWPORT–Maybe it was because the roads were still bad, or maybe because there was no school that day I don't know, but it was a very quiet crowd at North Country that bared witness to a rough 48-28 loss for the Falcon girls basketball team at the hands of the St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers.
"We need to make a change within our system of what we expect and what happens out there so that we can play with teams," said coach Brown after the loss, "We were able to do that in the first, but we need to make some adjustments."

NEWPORT CITY – The Newport City Council Monday turned down a request to endorse an item on Town Meeting Day that would say corporations are not people.
Vermont lawmakers and advocates plan to unveil a resolution for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would overrule a U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. The Federal Election Commission. The decision, made two years ago, held that corporations have the same rights as individuals to make unlimited contributions to independent groups seeking to influence elections.
NEWPORT, VT - With the controversy surrounding Dr. Leslie Lockridge and North Country Hospital, many cancer patients and survivors have come forward to share their stories. One such person is Gabrielle Bolton, now 25, of Morgan.
Gabrielle is recovering from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She began her battle against cancer four years ago while she was expecting her first child, a boy, whom she and her partner Derik Sanville named Collin. Gabrielle is now in remission.
NEWPORT, VT - Philip Brown, 21, of Waterville, VT, pleaded no contest yesterday to a charge of aggravated assault for choking a man until he was unconscious at a party in Eden on Sept. 12, 2009.
The victim, Adam Kaiser, passed out from a headlock and fell, apparently over a wheelbarrow, breaking his leg in two places. Kaiser had to have a steel rod put in his leg and screwed in.
NEWPORT CITY – Ryan Garrow, 19, of North Troy pled not guilty Tuesday in Orleans County Court to six misdemeanor charges. Judge Robert Bent ordered Garrow held on $10,000 bail and conditions, including that, if he makes bail, he be released into the custody of a responsible adult.
The charges include simple assault, disorderly conduct (fighting), operating a vehicle with a suspended license, and three charges of violation of conditions.

NEWPORT CITY – Vermont Yankee continues to be on the thoughts of many Vermonters and that was certainly the case at Monday’s Legislative Breakfast, held at the Eastside Restaurant.
Three years ago, Senate Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, decided the state’s only nuclear power plant should close, said Sen. Robert Starr (D-Orleans/Essex) of North Troy. He said lawmakers started working on a bill dealing with Vermont Yankee with no plan for the state’s energy future.
“You can’t turn the switch off without a plan to turn another switch to get the lights on,” said Starr.Â
