Derby Line Zoning Petition For Public Vote Not Valid

April 10, 2014

The petition signed by Derby Line residents calling for an Australian ballot vote on a proposed zoning bylaw change is not valid. If the residents want a public vote they will have to present another petition. The issue was, according to Derby Zoning Administrator Bob Kelly, that the wording on the petition did not call for a public vote.

But the issue may be resolved soon without a public vote.

Newport City Will Not Charge AnC Bio Impact Fees

NEWPORT CITY - The City of Newport will not require AnC Bio Vermont to pay part of any additional equipment that the city fire department will need in case of an emergency at the proposed plant located off the Lake Road.
City Manager John Ward Jr. told the city council Monday that Fire Chief Jamie LeClair told him the city would need about $20,000 worth of equipment.

Barton Solar LLC Receives $1 Million Loan

BARTON - The Vermont Economic Development Authority will lend $1 million for a solar farm on Route 16 in Barton. Barton Solar LLC has an application before the Public Service Board to construct a 1.89-megawatt solar generation facility on 24 acres just south of exit 25 on Interstate 91.

Twofoot Files Motion For Early Prison Release

NEWPORT CITY - Greg Twofoot filed a motion in civil court calling his sentence from an accident that took the lives of four teenagers “excessive, cruel, and unusual.” He wants to be released from prison earlier.

Meunier–– Michael Andre, 53, of North Troy, VT passed away peacefully on April 8, 2014 in Newport, VT, after a courageous long illness.

Spring Flooding Begins In Derby

April 9, 2014

The Derby Elementary School entrance flooded Tuesday along St. Edward’s Cemetery (above left) next to the school, which is still under several inches of water. One lane of the road is closed due to floodwaters. Derby Road Foreman Terry Tice said Wednesday that in 15 years he has seen flooding in that particular area, this is only the second time that it is really bad. Over the summer, Tice said, he is going to look into building a culvert or some other options to deal with the flooding in the area.

North Country Students Prepare For The Real World With Interview Day

NEWPORT CITY - Getting a job today without a good skill set is nearly impossible. That’s why the North Country Career Center mandates each senior to go through a mock interview. This year’s interviews took place at the school and at the Harold Haynes Land Lab. Most took place Wednesday, but some occurred Tuesday.

NC Career Center Students Win At Statewide Skills Competition

NEWPORT CITY – Several North Country Career Center students participated in, and brought back medals, in a statewide skills competition in Chittenden County last week.
Although some qualified for the national competition the students and faculty involved have not asked for funding to go to, nor have they asked the school board permission to hold a fundraiser.

Celine Champine Awarded SkillsUSA Advisor Of The Year

Celine Champine is a health careers teacher at North Country Career Center. She was recently awarded Advisor of the Year by the SkillsUSA organization as well as Teacher of the Year at the career center. Champine has been involved with the SkillsUSA organization for several years and recently started a club at the school. SkillsUSA promotes high school and college age students ability to learn skills such as how to write a resume, complete a job application, interview, and demonstrate proficiency in their career choices.
