State’s Attorney Debate In Essex County

July 29, 2014

BRIGHTON- On Monday evening a local contingent of voters had a rare opportunity - to watch debates for both the States Attorney’s position, as well as for the open House seat.  Incumbent State’s Attorney Vince Illuzzi of Derby is being contested for the first time since he was elected in 1998.  Julianne Woolard of Charleston has thrown her hat into the ring.

Essex County Race Draws Three

BRIGHTON- Fifteen years ago Gordon “Tiny” Stafford resigned his House seat for health reasons and Bill Johnson was appointed to the position.  Johnson announced his retirement following the conclusion of the legislative session.  Candidates Kenn Stransky of Norton, Paul Lefebvre of Newark, and Maurice Connary of Brighton are running as Republicans to fill the seat.  There are no Democratic candidates in this year’s race.

Coventry Looking to Start Its Own Road Department

COVENTRY – The Coventry select board is working to determine the best way to continue winter maintenance on town roads. The board will make its final decision Monday, Aug. 11.
Earlier this month Paul Meunier of Meunier’s Construction, the firm that has maintained the town’s 37 miles of roads since 1977, told the select board that he would like to retire. Meunier’s firm has primarily provided winter maintenance to the town, but also helped Road Commissioner Dave Gallup with some non-winter projects.

Stenger Responds to EB- 5 Investor Concerns

Bill Stenger of Jay Peak Resort said that he should have communicated better with the first investors in his Jay Peak development projects. The news surfaced recently that some of the foreign investors who gave money to build the Tram Haus Lodge at Jay Peak Resort, known as Phase I, expressed concerns with the deal. Stenger modified the agreement and did not tell investors until after the fact. The move was not illegal, but according to best practices the investors should have been told ahead of time. Investors also became concerned that they may not get their money back.

No Injuries in Sunday Crash

July 28, 2014

A state trooper checks over a 2007 Rav 4 Toyota that went over an embankment Sunday. In a press release, Trooper Steven Fauteux identified the operator and sole occupant as Haily Meyer, 20, of North Troy. The crash occurred at 4:34 p.m. on Route 105 in Coventry. Meyer, who was wearing her seat belt, went to North Country Hospital as a precautionary measure. The crash is under investigation.

American Liberty Tree Dedication

NEWPORT CITY – Newport City School students involved in the summer program had a special treat last Wednesday morning. They witnessed the presentation of a plaque to the school from the city council.

Act 250 Hearing Held for Dunkin' Donuts

July 28, 2014

DERBY - Developers wishing to construct a Dunkin' Donuts Restaurant on the Derby Road met with the Act 250 Commission at the Derby Municipal Offices last Thursday evening. The project received its local permits Monday, June 2.

Dog/Owner Get Reprieve Off To College

July 27, 2014

DERBY- The Derby select board held a special meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the antics of “Tusker” a three year old dog.  The Patrick Lawrence family lives on Herrick Road and following several complaints over the past year and a half, the select board decided to take action.

Air Show Thrills Large Crowd
