State Seeks Public Input About Police Taser Usage

DERBY - Community members Thursday evening, will have their chance to chime in their thoughts about the state developing a clear policy on law enforcement use of conducted electrical weapon (CEW) more commonly known as the brand name, Taser.

Alleged Rooftop Gunman Back In Court Facing New Charges

NEWPORT CITY - A Newport man who held police at bay for several hours last September was back in court Monday to answer a felony charge of unlawful trespass of an occupied residence and misdemeanor charges of unlawful trespass-land, disorderly conduct, and violation of conditions of pretrial release. Derick Niles, 36, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Legislature Contemplates Forcing Stores To Charge Customers For Using Disposable Bags

DERBY - Although it hasn’t gained much traction yet, the Legislature is contemplating a bill that requires merchants to charge ten cents for each disposable bag used. The fee would be imposed on both paper and plastic carryout bags.

MSTF Brings Back Biathlon

The Memphremagog Ski Touring Foundation (MSTF) brought back its famous, fun event: the paintball biathlon. Cross-country ski enthusiasts of all ages, ranging from three to adult, gathered near the trails in Derby Saturday morning to participate.

Higley Gives Update On House Government Ops Committee

DERBY - The death of a mentally unstable man (Macadam Mason), who was shot by a state police officer last year, has spurred the Legislature to sponsor a bill to improve training for the use of Tasers. The Government Operations Committee is taking testimony to set standards as to when a Taser can be used by law enforcement officials.

Falcons Have Strong Showing at Essex Rotary Classic

ESSEX–Five members for the North Country hockey program who headed over to the Essex Skating facility on Saturday to take part in the 2014 Essex Rotary Key Bank Hockey All-Star Classic.
Crystal Moss and Corrina Cota represented the girls team, while Ross DeLaBruere, Ryan Paul and Nate Marsh were there for the boys.
