NEWPORT/MIDDLEBURY–If you looked at all of the records of the spring teams from North Country, the one that stands out is that of the Falcons boys' tennis crew.
The boys have not lost a match in over a month, currently have a 6-1-1 record and are ranked in the top third of all Division I teams.
"The team likens itself to a junk yard dog," said coach Gary Atchinson. "We have no real big shotmakers. We work our points and I would say we are a real lunch pail, blue collar team."
Starting the weekend at 4-1-1, the boys won back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday to improve their record.

NEWPORT–Two games in two days can be tough for any athlete, but for a softball pitcher that has to go out and throw back-to-back complete games, it is down right brutal.
That is what Kayla Descheneau had to do this past Thursday and Friday when she took the circle for the Falcons against Colchester and Mount Abe.
With freshman pitcher Taylor Blake unavailable due to a concussion, coach Leslie Dunn had limited options.

NEWPORT–Triple plays are rare.
I think Taurus at it's full height must triumph over Aries and then trump Gemini, or something to that fact, for it to occur.
Well whether or not the stars were aligned, North Country pulled one off in the sixth inning of their game against Mount Abe on Friday.
Since I was over at the softball game at the time, I will let Nate Stewart, the guy who was in the middle of the action, tell you how it went down.

ORLEANS–It is just a tough time to be a Ranger baseball player.
Lake Region lost their eighth game of the season on Saturday, 14-3 to People Academy, but coach Eric Degree saw some positives on the field from his club.
"My team's play has been a little better than it was earlier this week. They (PA) got a lot of breaks out there today and we did not get any. I got some guys who really starting to come around and we are playing improved defense."
In the second week of competition, the North Country girls’ golf team competed in two tournaments. On Wednesday the 9th, Bailey Walker, Eilish Muir and Paige Gagnon travel to South Burlington to play at the Vermont National Country Club. The team placed 3rd overall. Captain Bailey Walker shot a 51 in the 9 hole tournament. Captain Eilish Muir shot a 65, and new comer Paige Gagnon, in her second career tournament carded a 71. On Thursday the 10th the threesome traveled to Enosburg. Bailey’s 49, on the damp and muddy course was the low round, making her the medalist.
NEWPORT CENTER – Late Saturday, fire destroyed the home of Charles Roberts, father of 16-year-old Dustin Roberts who passed away in February after a long battle with cancer.
Firefighters were called to Number 12 Road just past 11 p.m. for a fully engulfed structure fire.
“When we got there, the house was fully involved,” said Kurk Flynn, Newport Center Fire Chief. “We called for extensive mutual-aid from North Troy, Jay, Troy, Irasburg and Newport City.”
Firefighters had the blaze under control in about three hours but remained on the scene until 6 a.m.
DERBY, VT - It's no secret that IROC (Indoor Recreation of Orleans County) has had a struggle to establish itself and survive, especially in an economy that has dried up much of its funding and drained its supporters.
Nevertheless, IROC has continued to offer much needed services to area communities. Few people want to see it go.
But that is just what might happen, as the organization faces foreclosure proceedings from Community National Bank and Rural Development.

DERBY, VT/STANSTEAD, QUE. – Stanstead can now officially intervene on the proposed Derby Line Wind project, according to an order by the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) issued May 9.
Stanstead residents and town officials are in an uproar over the proposed project and have held rallies against it. Stanstead Mayor Philippe Dutil even threatened to shut off the water to Beebe Plains, VT, if Vermont towns and villages on the border support the project.
The Town of Stanstead requested to intervene because of the proximity of the project to Stanstead residents, according to the motion.
DERBY – It’s business as usual for WMOO-FM and WIKE-AM, even though its parent company, Nassau Broadcasting, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
The bankruptcy filing includes all stations the company owns in New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Â Â
Rumors that the stations have been sold have been circulating for the past couple of weeks.
“There’s been an offer on them, but they haven’t been sold,” said general manager Michael Waggoner, “MOO will always be MOO.”
NEWPORT, VT - It was Derby Day at Lago Tratoria, where ladies and gents were dressed in their finery to celebrate the most famous horse race in American history, the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.
This year’s race at Churchill Downs was won by #19, I’ll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez of Vancouver.
The Newport event was a fundraiser for the Renaissance Corporation. Participants paid a door fee, engaged in a silent auction, and even had a Derby hat contest, with the ladies appearing in their finest millinery.
