NEWPORT CITY – The Memphremagog Navigation Company may soon sail Lake Memphremagog once again. The company ran two different passenger boats between 1996 and 2001.
For the past several years, Chris Johansen, of the Memphremagog Navigation Company, has worked for Green Mountain Boat Lines, which owns the Spirit of Ethan Allen and the Moonlight Lady.

CITY SETS TAX RATE

NEWPORT CITY – The city council Monday approved the 2012-2013 residential municipal tax rate with a three-cent per $100 of assessed value increase. At the same time, the city school has a three-cent decrease, with a final rate of 2.6826 cents, combined educational and residential.
Last year’s residential rate, with the education rate, was 2.6814. This year’s non-residential tax rate is 2.8530. Last year’s rate was 2.8802.

State Asked to Investigate Illegal Dumping

HOLLAND – Local farmer Keith Gray confirmed Monday that illegal dumping is occurring on his property, and he says he doesn’t allow it.
Gray was contacted Monday afternoon regarding the issue. Gray said he went up to the site, an old gravel pit on Bullis Road in Holland, Monday evening to look around. He said he found some rubbish, but it has been worse in the past.

Pion Faces New Charge

NEWPORT - Roger Pion, the 34-year old accused of crushing seven police vehicles with a tractor, is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. on a new count: driving with a suspended license.
An Orleans Superior Court Judge has found probable cause that when Pion took a tractor and drove through Newport City streets up to the Orleans County Sheriff's Department and crushed six cruisers and a transport vehicle, he did not have a license to drive on the roads.

Swimmers, Staff Battle the Elements to Complete a Successful 2012 In Search of Memphre

Newport, VT and Magog, QC–On September 8th, 2012 seven marathon swimmers undertook the 25 mile, international swim, going the length of Lake Memphremagog between Newport, Vermont and Magog, Quebec. Swimmers departed in two waves from The Gateway Center in Newport. The first group of four left at 12:12 am with the second wave of three leaving an hour later at 1:12 am. The plan was to start the faster swimmers later so that the distance between swimmers would compress during the night before it spread out later in the swim.

UCA Notches First Win of the Year, Defeat Mid-VT 5-2

On Monday, the UCA Crusader boys picked up their first win in their second game of the young soccer season, defeating Mid-Vermont 5-2.
Jon DeLaBruere opened the scoring about 4 minutes into the game with a beautiful shot into the corner of the net from outside the 18.
The Crusaders were just getting started.
Justin Limoge and Dale Martell’s goals increased the lead to 3-0 before Mid-Vermont got on the board on a header by Austin Sayer.
Sayer was able to redirect a corner into the net to cut the lead to 3-1.

Craftsbury Academy's New Gym is a Total Community Effort

The construction of the new gymnasium at Craftsbury Academy has been a team effort between the school and members of the community.
Thirty-eight landowners donated approximately 180 trees, including 8,860 feet of Sugar Maple for the main floor and 2,860 of Yellow Birch for the out of bounds area, towards the construction of the new gym.
Tom Lathrop of Vermont Specialty Wood Products from Bristol, VT, manufactured the wood for the school at a huge savings (aprox. $35,000.00).
Don Blake from Morrisville donated all the nails, and Menard’s Agway donated flooring nailers.
