Charleston School Embraces Ill Home School Student

CHARLESTON, VT – Six years after being diagnosed with a rare muscle disease called Dermatomyositis, Mariah Bowman recently underwent surgery to replace her liver, pancreas, intestines and abdominal muscles.
Bowman began to show symptoms of the disease at the age of 11, while a student at Charleston Elementary School.
In spite of the fact that Bowman is home schooled and has been staying in Indianapolis with her mother while she undergoes treatment, former counselor and now principal at the school Sharon Gonyaw has worked with others in the community to raise funds for Bowman.

Cross Country Falcons Win Season Opener at Home

NEWPORT–You could not ask for much better conditions to kick off a season, as with nary a cloud in the sky, the North Country cross-country team opened the 2012 campaign by sweeping the top spots in both the boys and the girls races, while taking the overall team races as well.
"We take it pretty seriously. We go into it saying 'this is our home meet', so we want to do well," said Falcon senior Haley Jo Tetreault.
And do well they did as the varsity action got underway with the girls’ race at 4:00.

NEWPORT–Devinnie Davis just keeps on rolling.
The freshman netted another two goals on Tuesday as the Falcons shut-out their third straight opponent, defeating St. Johnsbury 4-0.
Davis has been playing at a high level all of her life, and she said that the transition to the varsity program was not as difficult as it may seem to others.
"I feel like a part of the team since I started playing (with NCU) and the girls welcomed me in," said Davis on where some of her confidence has come from.

LR Tops Oxbow 3-0

OXBOW–Another day, another three points for Lake Region's Tyrah Urie, as the sophomore had two goals and an assist to help lead the Lady Rangers past Oxbow Olympians 3-0.
"I am happy with our overall team effort, although I would like to see a little more consistency," said head coach Brad Urie.
Nine minutes into the game LRU got on the board when Urie converted a direct kick by Ashley Locke for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.

UCA Falls 4-3

NEWPORT–UCA's girls soccer team played in their home opener on Tuesday, hosting Winooski at Gardner Park, and while they lost 4-3, head coach Molly Smith likes what she saw from her team.
"I believed we shocked them, they thought they were going to come in and score many goals on us but we stood our ground and when they scored we came right back and scored, the game was at heart skipper.
“I think we earned some respect today, that we are not just a bunch of girls playing soccer,we are a team to beat.

Merle Benway, 82, of Glover died Monday, September 10, 2012 at home. He was born January 22, 1930 in North Troy, VT. He was the son of Russel Alfred Benway and Hazel Watson Benway.
He worked on construction for many years and was the Road Commissioner for the Town of Glover for over 20 years. He loved his horses and his faithful dog, Emma.

NEWPORT CITY – The Memphremagog Navigation Company may soon sail Lake Memphremagog once again. The company ran two different passenger boats between 1996 and 2001.
For the past several years, Chris Johansen, of the Memphremagog Navigation Company, has worked for Green Mountain Boat Lines, which owns the Spirit of Ethan Allen and the Moonlight Lady.

CITY SETS TAX RATE

NEWPORT CITY – The city council Monday approved the 2012-2013 residential municipal tax rate with a three-cent per $100 of assessed value increase. At the same time, the city school has a three-cent decrease, with a final rate of 2.6826 cents, combined educational and residential.
Last year’s residential rate, with the education rate, was 2.6814. This year’s non-residential tax rate is 2.8530. Last year’s rate was 2.8802.
