DERBY LINE - Opponents of the Derby Line Wind Project are hailing a decision by the Public Service Board (PSB) Friday to deny Encore Redevelopment a "milestone extension." If the extension had been granted, it would have allowed the company to have more time to meet the requirements necessary for SPEED money, giving Encore a pipeline to renewable energy credits and a guaranteed return.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ More than 400 individuals camped out at North Country Union High School Saturday evening for one common cause, to take part in the annual Northeast Kingdom Relay for Life and raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Most participants were part of teams comprised of co-workers, friends and family members who were all part of one big family for 12 hours.Â They ate together, walked together and shared stories. They also laughed and cried together.Â

DERBY â€“ U.S. Rural Development (RD) and Community National Bank have denied IROCâ€™s request to postpone foreclosure action for one year. IROC is in debt for $1.1 million and has been unable to make the mortgage payments.
Phil White, the unpaid executive director of IROC, had requested that RD and the bank wait on foreclosure until next year following Town Meeting Day. White is petitioning towns to ask voters to approve giving IROC money every year for ten years. However, the lenders say that there is no guarantee the plan will work.
NEWPORT CENTER - Beverly Carter, 81, of Washington, D.C., was rescued from her burning vehicle after going off the road on VT RT 105 in Newport Center and colliding with a tree.
Carter was trapped in her Volvo wagon when two men, whose names have not been released, came to her aid, working together to lift the dashboard off her legs, pull the car seat back and move her to safety on the side of the road. By the time the Newport Center Fire Department arrived on the scene, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Eileen Illuzzi of Derby is the new interim director of the North Country Career Center. The North Country Union High School Board made the official announcement last week. Illuzzi will replace Richard Hoffman who did not renew his contract and is pursuing other interests.
Illuzzi has been assistant director for three years. Illuzzi applied for the position three years ago. Back then, Illuzzi was the Adult Services Coordinator.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ For 39 years, many people have known Rayâ€™s Market in Irasburg for its quality meats and friendly atmosphere. Now owner, Leo Piette has expanded the reputation and opened a new store on Route 105 in Newport, on Highland Avenue.
Piette opened the new store last week. He said he wanted to expand its operations outside Irasburg. â€śWe have people from all over coming to buy our meat,â€ť Piette said.
Some visitors with second homes in the region return home with a supply of meat with them.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Anthony Rodriguez from TNT Explosive Tattoo went to the city council Monday to ask permission to close Second Street for a block party and open house.
But he first had to answer specific questions about his business practices. Even at the end, Rodriguez didn't get his way.
Rodriguez wanted to hold the party Saturday, July 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
He told the council there are a lot of children who live on the block and he wanted to show the public his business. He said he wants customers to feel comfortable in his shop.
LOWELL - The strong storms that tore through the area May 29 caused problems at the Lowell wind site. Repair work began as soon as the rain stopped.
Several silt fences, ditches, and culverts were in need and a plugged culvert caused several problems and overwhelmed other systems. Some significant erosion occurred in some areas that needed restoring. Sediment was found in streams and wetlands.
Some discharge is allowed by the permit.
