Whooping Cough Clinic Today

NEWPORT CITY – The Vermont Department of Health (DOH) has announced that there is a whooping cough epidemic in the state, with more people afflicted than ever before; ten times as many cases as last year. Vermont is not the only state seeing the problem, but it is ranked third in the nation for people with the illness.
Whooping cough, also know as pertussis, is a highly contagious illness caused by bacteria. It mainly affects the respiratory system.

 NEWPORT CITY – Bill Stenger, co-owner and president of Jay Peak Resort, the driving force behind efforts to renovate downtown Newport, met with the Newport City Council Monday to report on his progress.
Some residents at that meeting expressed concern that plans for the new Renaissance Block, which will replace the Spates Block on Main Street, won't meet the form-based code for setbacks.
Zoning Administrator Paul Dreher said that Stenger, architects and others working on the Spates Block consult with him regularly over any changes, and to date they have stuck by the form-based code.

Brighton Board Backs Big Wind Moratorium

BRIGHTON - The Brighton Planning Commission is expected to vote to support the Northeastern Vermont Development Association's (NVDA) call for a three-year moratorium on industrial wind development in the area. Two industrial wind projects are already operating in Lowell and Sheffield. The draft letter under consideration was suggested by commission member Billy Hawkins in light of the proposed Seneca Mountain Wind project consisting of three dozen wind turbines in Brighton, Newark, and Ferdinand.

Irasburg Man Denies Fraud Charge

NEWPORT CITY – Eugene Menard Jr., 27, of Irasburg, pleaded not guilty in Orleans County Court Tuesday to a charge of home improvement fraud.
According to the complaint, the defendant met Shirley Donovan at a yard sale and discussed doing some carpentry work for her. At that time, Menard reportedly told Donovan that the work would cost $12 per hour and that he would begin after Labor Day.

Local Schools Respond to Connecticut Tragedy

ORLEANS COUNTY – In the wake of the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which left 20 children and six adults dead, local schools and administrators are taking action. As a first step, Dr. Robert Kern, superintendent of the North Country Supervisory Union, has issued an open letter to the community that addresses concerns and policies in place. Doug Westin, principal of Derby Elementary School, is also working on a letter to parents of Derby and Morgan students.

DERBY LINE – Looking for a bit of Christmas cheer? Look no further than the Louis and Gerry Barber residence where the couple has taken decorating to a new level.
Like many families, the Barbers decorate the exterior of their home with lights. On the inside of their home, the family has a Christmas village complete with tiny illuminated houses and a model railroad train set. Some of the decorations are even animated.

NEW BRANCH ON FAMILY DOLLAR TREE

DERBY – The Family Dollar Store, with locations in Newport City and Orleans, is expanding its Northeast Kingdom territory once again. This time the company is opening a store on US RT 5, across from McDonald’s.
The store will be in a new building on property owned by Jim Mulkin.
The new store will be about 8,000 square feet, the same as the store on Main Street in Orleans. The store in downtown Newport is 10,000 square feet.

Rivers–– Wendell C., Jr., 61, of Albany, died at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington Tuesday evening, December 11, 2012 with his long-time partner, Cheryl Lafaso, by his side. A graveside service was held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Albany Village Cemetery with Rev. Lawrence Wall and Pastor Tim Ingalls officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Society, 502 Strawberry Acres, Newport, VT 05855. Curtis-Britch & Davis Funeral Home, Craftsbury Common, VT is in charge of arrangements.

A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS

NEWPORT CITY – Over a 100 families with young children had a chance to put the trials and tribulations of everyday life aside for a few hours Saturday and enjoy a real hometown Christmas, thanks primarily to Newport City native and Burlington real estate developer Tony Pomerleau. The dinner was for families who may not have had the Christmas they’d like to have.
