DERBY â€“ Robert Favali, a director at DuBois & King Inc., presented an assessment proposal for the existing mechanical and plumbing systems at the North Country Union Junior High School board meeting recently.
The school was constructed in 1957 and an addition was built in 1990. Favali advised the school board that even the 1990 building's modernized temperature control package needs replacement.
NEWPORTâ€“Katie Stames scored three goals to lead Peoples Academy to a 6-2 win over North Country in girls soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
"They can score and they are all skilled That was a skill mismatch that we had to deal with and we got out smarted," said Falcon coach Peter Alexander.
North Country got off to a good start against the Wolves, as Brooke Breault fed Devinnie Davis to get the scoring started eleven minutes into the contest.
FAIRFAXâ€“Lake Region ran up against the toughest team they are likely to face this season, BFA Fairfax, and while they played well, they came up just a little short on Tuesday afternoon.
After forty minutes the game remained scoreless, but seven minutes into the second BFA's Anissa Hartman was left alone in front of the net and buried the ball, giving Fairfax the 1-0 lead.
With 15:00 left in the half, BFA made it 2-0 as Kailtlyn Barnack found the back of the cage.
Karamae Hayman-Jones had the lone Lake Region goal on a feed from Tyrah Urie with 9:55 left to play.
ORLEANS â€“ For 80 years, Ethan Allen manufacturing has been producing high quality home furnishings. Yesterday company officials kicked off their celebration on the historic milestone by touring the plants and meeting with employees in Beecher Falls and Orleans. Today CEO Farooq Kathwari and Regional Operations Manager Mike Worth will ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
During a private luncheon, Kathwari said Ethan Allen survived the Great Depression and the Great Recession. â€śThose are two very important time periods,â€ť said Kathwari.
COVENTRY â€“ Tyler Collins, 16, of Newport Center, died in a car crash Monday on Alderbrook Road in Coventry.
Collins, a junior at North Country Union High School, was reported driving a Hyundai Tiburon over the speed limit and headed west when he passed an Orleans County Deputy headed east. The deputy turned his cruiser around and activated lights and siren to stop the vehicle.
VERMONT â€“ The state bear population has grown so large that officials are taking action to bring the number down. Because there are so many bears now, estimated at more than 6,000 statewide, the number of nuisance complaints from residents is at a record high.
NEWPORTâ€“The UCA Crusaders ran up against a speedy Trinity Baptist Kings team on Monday afternoon, losing the contest 3-0.
"We've got some adjusting to do before we see them next week," UCA coach Alyssa DeLaBruere after the game. "Speed is not our strength. We've got size but not speed, so we have got to figure out a way to shut down three or four of their players that just can go."
The Kings used their quick feet to get on the board early as Christopher Zamarippa opened the scoring off of a corner kick just five minutes into the contest.
TROY â€“ Sen. Bernie Sanders held his annual pig roast with all the fixings at the Randall Family Farm Sunday.
Sanders, an Independent, is worried that Republicans want to do deficit reduction on the backs of the elderly, children, sick and poor. He said that Republicans want to cut Social Security, end Medicare and move it to a very different type of program. They also want to make cuts in Medicaid, in nutrition programs and in education, he said. Sanders called the plan morally grotesque and bad economic policy.
