Group Wants To Restore Gardner Park Grandstand

NEWPORT CITY – If a group of local residents have their way they will restore the Gardner Park grandstand and save it from the wrecking ball. Before that happens an engineer has to do a feasibility study.
The Gardner Park Restoration Committee, the City of Newport, and Newport Rotary Club are just three of the groups looking to restore the grandstand before its 75th anniversary next year.

Cartee Longest Serving NC School Director

NEWPORT CITY — Nineteen years ago Nicole Johnson resigned from the North Country Union High School Board and Richard Cartee was appointed to replace her. He is now the longest serving member of the high school board and is also chairman of the junior high school board.

Smith Brothers Prevail at 2014 Member-Guest Tournament

NEWPORT–With perfect weather, great playing conditions and group of talented golfers, the 2014 Newport Daily Express Member/Guest Tournament at the Newport Country Club was quite the weekend for our area golfers and their partners.
On Sunday afternoon, after it was all said and done, brothers Shawn and Mike Smith defeated Adam Hiliker and Nick Vosnick in a two hole final to become crowned the 2014 champions.
"I was pretty confident," said Shawn when asked how he was feeling during the final. "We were playing some pretty good golf and I was confident that we could win it."

Community Commons Forum: Drug Addicts Need Support, Resources To Recover

NEWPORT CITY – Several groups agree that people addicted to illicit drugs and want to recover need opportunity, support and resources.
Illicit drug use was the topic of discussion during a Community Commons forum held at the Gateway Center Wednesday evening.

New Wellness Program In Newport For The Whole Person

Louise Whipple has always been interested in the health field, but early on she set her sights on hair design school. She liked the fact her clients would be leaving her feeling good about themselves and looking their best. Whipple has been making people look their best for many years, but decided to focus on working with the whole person — both inner and outer beauty.

Montreal-Portland Pipeline: Tar Sands Through Kingdom Remains A Concern

NEWPORT — Many remain concerned that tar sands oil could be shipped through the Montreal-Portland Pipeline that runs through the Northeast Kingdom, including Orleans County.

Coventry Might Have To Change Its Road Maintenance Plan

Northeast Kingdom: Asian News Crew Looks Into Border Relations

NEWPORT CITY - Many foreigners eye America as having fairly open borders and now it has gained the attention of a television news crew from Kyrgyzstan, a country in Central Asia. Over the Fourth of July weekend, that crew spent time in the Northeast Kingdom.

First Universalist Parish Considers Electric Car Charging Station

DERBY — The First Universalist Parish in Derby Line set a high bar by placing solar panels on the roof of the addition to their church. Parishioners and other interested people can purchase a share of the panel’s production to offset their electric bills. Now the board of directors is considering adding a charging station to accommodate electric car owners.
