Vermont’s Frigid Winter And Wildlife Survival

The Northeast Kingdom is home to numerous species of wildlife. Even though the animals are at the mercy of the elements, they have endured over time in numbers both up and down depending on several circumstances. The weather and especially the ability to find food are large issues affecting them. They do have warm coats of fur and other mechanisms to keep warm through Vermont’s harsh climate, but deep snow pack can create some issues.

Scoping Out A Potential Meal

Wayne Wheeler has been feeding birds at as home on Clyde Street in Newport for decades. He has had to chase away a number of cats who viewed the birds at his feeder as tasty morsels. On Thursday, Wayne spotted this “cat” scoping out the birds at his feeder — a bobcat. He snapped a few photos of the cat before it moved on its way. Although bobcats are common in Vermont, many Vermonters live here all their lives and never see these illusive creatures, however, this year the harsh winter is bringing them out of hiding in search of food. Vietnam Veteran Ross Davis Has ‘A Lot Of Memories, Good And Bad’

DERBY - The Vermont Legislature will offer a resolution honoring Vietnam veterans on Friday, March 29, at 9 a.m. at the State House. Saturday marks the 41st anniversary commemorating the end of the war. The resolution is co-sponsored by Representative Vickie Strong of Albany.

A veteran of the Vietnam War left a countryside in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 1967, traveling across the world to join the conflict. Ross Davis lives in Craftsbury but was born and raised in Albany.

Derby Village Store Expansion Approved By Town Planners

The popular community grocery outlet, Derby Village Store, is expanding. Customers haven’t minded the close, intimate shopping aisles in the store that is usually hopping with customers, but will appreciate more room.

Troy School Board Seeks More Money After Bond Approval

NORTH TROY - After a long fought battle to get voter approval for a $1.1 million bond to upgrade the school, insulate portions of the building, and improve safe access to the building, the Troy school board is asking for an additional $287,300.

Newport Dentist To Open Office In Dominican Republic

Newport dentist Dr. Paul Bosco and his wife Elizabeth spent Feb. 27 to March 4 in the Dominican Republic, an island in the Caribbean. Part of the trip was for pleasure and part was to evaluate the dental health of the children who live in the village he visited. Fresh back from his trip, Bosco is preparing to help open a dental office there.

Cruiser Crusher Criminal Case Continues

NEWPORT CITY - The case of Roger Pion, the man accused of crushing several Orleans County Sheriff Department cruisers in 2012, continues to plow through the court system.
Pion appeared in Orleans County District Court Tuesday for a status conference.
