Loses Not the Story in Falcons’ Final Two Games

June 1, 2014

NEWPORT-The North Country Falcons wrapped up their regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader against first Rice, and then second St. Johnsbury.
While neither game went the way the Falcons would have wanted, what did happen was a fine display of just how far this year's team has advanced from the teams that have recently come before them.
"I thought the effort was good," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio. "In the second game I thought we played hard, we had a couple of physical mistakes, errors, but those are going to happen, you can't eliminate those so I have nothing to complain about.

Rangers Finish Season With Win Over Danville

June 1, 2014

ORLEANS- In an efficient five innings, Lake Region baseball defeated guest Danville Friday afternoon before the umpires called the game early due to thunder and rain.
Josh Locke took the mound for the home squad and continued a productive season by doing what he is supposed to: throw strikes. The defense behind him would worry about the rest.

Goulet Medals, Lake Region Wins at Orleans

June 1, 2014

ORLEANS-North Country's Katie Goulet took home home the individual top spot, but it was the Lake Region team coming in first place at the Orleans Country Club on Thursday afternoon.
Goulet shot a match-low of 45, but the Lady Rangers' Olivia King (48) and Celeste Lussier (49) were right behind her and combined to score a 97 to give the host team the win.
Becky Doucet had a season-best score of 60 for Lake Region.
North Country's Paige Gagnon shot a 57, which along with Goulet's 45 gave the Falcons a team score of 102.

Cota Goes Yard, Triples, in Lady Rangers’ Final Home Game

June 1, 2014

ORLEANS- You might not think a team with a 6-9 record would head into the play-offs with as much optimism as the Lake Region Rangers softball team.
But rarely is a 6-9 team playing with as much confidence as this batch is at the end of the regular season.
The Rangers finished their regular season this past week with the unenviable task of playing four games in four days, splitting the quartet of contests.

Falcons Fall Short in Season Finale Against Hilltoppers

June 1, 2014

NEWPORT-North Country softball fought until the final play Saturday afternoon as they hosted and lost to a strong team from St. Johnsbury Academy.
The first inning was a rather dry one. Taylor Blake took the circle for NCU, finding the zone as the guests managed some weak contact. Maddie Mosher fielded the first hit and hurled the ball to first for the initial out. She fielded the second as well, flipping the ball to second to get one more on a force. St. J’s Margret Fogarty hit a far foul ball to right that would be caught by Brittany Verge for three.

North Country Battles Into the 9th, Falls Just Short Against CVU

May 29, 2014

“We’ve always thought we could play with the best,” head coach Brian Bonvechio said after the loss. “I think this game proved it.”

North Country Tennis Boys Wrap Up Season at States

May 29, 2014

The North Country Falcons traveled to Warren, Vermont, as the tenth-ranked team to take on number seven-ranked Harwood.
Unfortunately, the match was held amidst controversy.
High school tennis is played on hard courts, yet the Falcons were forced to play on a very unfamiliar surface on three of the five courts, that surface being clay.
Harwood had hardcourt options they've used frequently this season yet insisted on putting us on clay. It seemed unsporting and unfair. It was all about the ‘equal playing field’ cliche.

Lady Rangers Take Down Peoples Academy 8-7

May 29, 2014

ORLEANS- Lake Region softball defeated Peoples Academy 8-7 as the two teams battled neck and neck until the bottom of the seventh.
The Lady Rangers’ senior day began with a slow start. Following the pregame celebration honoring the soon-to-graduate second baseman Alyssa Royer, pitcher Michelle Thibeault and catcher Corinna Cota, the home team took the field.

Falcons Use Entire Line-Up in 11-0 Win over Mount Abe.

May 28, 2014

NEWPORT-The North Country Falcons scored nine runs in the first four innings, which helped pace them to an 11-0, complete team win over the Mount Abraham Eagles on Wednesday afternoon.
"We knew (Mt. Abe) had struggled offensively and we talked about getting a lead and scoring some runs early for Wyatt," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio. "I was pleased with the effort, and you can see, we have a nice, deep team we can do a lot of things with."
