June 6, 2012

The North Country Union High School Girls Golf team wrapped up their season with a very respectable fourth place finish at the Division I State Finals at the Proctor Pittsford Country Club on Tuesday.
The best two out of three scores are tallied for each team in the tournament. The NCU team was represented by seniors Bailey Walker and Eilish Muir, and sophomore Paige Gagnon.

One Obstacle Left in Matt Morin’s Title Quest

June 5, 2012

ON THE ROADS OF VERMONT–When I called Matt Morin to ask him how he is doing and what he is doing in order to get ready for today's VPA High School State Championships in Middlebury, I caught him, along with his coach Sylvain Gagnon and teammate Carl Oberg traveling the cell phone service challenged roads of the Green Mountain State.
After several episodes of "Hello... Hello.. can you hear me?," I was finally able to talk to both Matt and his coach about today's tournament.

Webster Makes it Two in a Row in Discus at VT State Meet

June 3, 2012

BURLINGTON–The conditions at the Vermont State Division I Track Field Championships were anything but ideal, but that did not stop the North Country Falcons from achieving success at the meet.
The boys team brought home two first place finishes at the event, the first one coming from Jason Webster, whose 134 foot throw in the discus propelled him six feet past Brattleboro's Andy Hale for his second consecutive state title.
"Of course I am ecstatic to come back and defend my title. It was one of those things that I worried about all season, but coach told me to relax and do what you do.

Season a Success Despite First Round Loss

May 31, 2012

NEWPORT–Coming into the opening round of the play-offs, the North Country boys tennis team was ranked fourth overall in Division I.
Their opponent, Champlain Valley was slated as the thirteenth seed.
How very misleading these numbers turned out to be.
The Falcons came out, gave everything they had, but still ended up on the losing end of things, falling 6-1 to bow out of the opening round of the play-offs.

Lyndon Defeats Lake Region 15-4

May 31, 2012

LYNDON– It didn't take long for Lyndon Institute to set the tone.
After roping an inside-the-park home run in the game's first at bat, No. 3 Lyndon Institute cruised to a 15-4 victory over 14th-seeded Lake Region in high school girls softball Division II playdowns Wednesday afternoon.
The Vikings' (14-3) early dominance earned them a 9-0 lead after the first two innings, a comfortable margin for a veteran club looking to return to the state championship game after falling in that contest a year ago.

Falcons Seasons Come to an End on the Road Against CVU and MMU

May 31, 2012

JERICHO–After performing well in her final two regular season starts, coach Leslie Dunn opted to go with Taylor Blake out of the shute for the Falcons opening round game against Mount Mansfield.
“She was great against Essex and MVU, so I figured we might as well go with her as she performs much better as a starter than as a reliever,” said Dunn.
Blake gave it her all, but MMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, so the coach brought in the ever-reliable Kayla Descheneau mid-way through the second to finish out the contest.

Morin Takes Sectionals With a 1 Over 73, Moves on to States

May 31, 2012

WATERBURY–Harwood was the best team while Matt Morin of Lake Region was the top individual at the Division II sectionals on Wednesday.
Morin shot a 1 over 73 to earn the win.
The highlight of Morin’s round was a 17th hole Eagle to pull ahead of Harwood's Brooks Curran who finished 2nd with a very nice 76.
Another Lake Region score of note was Carl Oberg’s very respectable 88.
It was not quite good enough to send him to States as an individual but still a very good effort on his part.
Team Results were as follows:
Harwood 1st with a total of 326.
Lyndon Institute 2nd with total of 343.

Lady Rangers Drop Final Play-off Tune Up 15-3

May 28, 2012

ORLEANS–In their final regular season tune-up, the Lady Rangers dropped a tough one to the Richford Rockets 15-3.
"We spanked every ball we hit, but gave up seven unearned runs in two innings,” said coach Matt Tinker. "We get behind by five or six runs and the girls start to push too hard and instead of getting anything we get nothing."
After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Lake Region jumped out to 1-0 lead as Kayla Royer singled and came around to score the game's first run.

Falcons End Lake Region’s Season With 6-3 Win

May 28, 2012

ORLEANS–This just wasn't Lake Region's year.
The baseball Rangers finished off their season losing 6-3 to Richford on senior day last Thursday, ending 2012 in last place in Division II with a 2-13 record.
But the future looks bright for the team.
Lake Region has a core of young players, as well as some coming up the pipe, which could spark a turnaround in the blue and white's future.
"We had a freshman on the mound today, and there are some great young kids that are coming up, said coach Eric Degre. "This year we just didn't get the bounces, but the youth is there.

Falcons’ Tennis Opens Play-offs at Home This Wednesday

May 28, 2012

BARRE–In their final two regular season matches of the season, North Country's boys tennis team blanked Spaulding 7-0 in back-to-back matches to close out the season with a 9-1-1 record, 4th overall in Division I.
In the first match the Falcons went with their traditional line-up and won with a combined score of 56-7.
In the second match they juggled their line-up and still won easily with a 56-13 total score.
"Dave was his usual workman-like self, Thomas' serve was clicking and his was strong at the net, and Maoz simply overwhelmed his opponent," said coach Gary Atchinson.
