AG CANDIDATE WANTS JUSTICE

NEWPORT, VT - Jack McMullen, the GOP candidate for Vermont Attorney General, has been campaigning in the Northeast Kingdom on a platform of fighting violent and drug-related crimes. He believes that Vermont's current attorney general, Bill Sorrell, has done a great job on issues of environment, embezzlement and consumerism, but in doing so has not paid enough attention to street crime.
McMullen wants to establish a set of guidelines for a uniform drug-related crime policy.
"I think we need to deal with drug crime in this state," he said. He pointed out that many home invasions and burglaries are often related to the sale or use of drugs.
McMullen pointed out that Sorrell is the "longest serving state attorney general in the country," and maybe it's time for a change.
In person, McMullen comes across as someone with a sharp mind, a sharper wit, a sense of humor and a priority of balancing government to serve the people in a nonpartisan way. He never discusses Sorrell as a Democrat, but talks instead about paying attention to the victims in this state "and making sure justice is done."
"Justice" is the word he uses the most.
The candidate has been criticized for not being admitted to the Vermont Bar, but he is in the process of obtaining admission and is admitted to the bars of New York, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C., including the federal bar. He has been involved in more than 30 trials in the northeastern, mid-western, southwestern, and western regions of the United States.
In addition, he said in a recent interview, the job of Vermont Attorney General (AG) is focused largely on administration and policy rather than court appearances, which are handled by the numerous attorneys in the AG's office.
McMullen graduated from Columbia University in New York with a B.S. in Applied Physics and Electronics Engineering. He then entered the U.S. Navy in 1964 and served on the staff of Admiral Hyman Rickover in Washington, DC., where he was a manager of the Navy's program to outfit submarines with modern nuclear reactors.

McMullen then attended Harvard Business School in 1969 and earned his MBA in 1972. He also graduated from Harvard Law School with honors in 1973.
McMullen worked at several Boston-area law firms in the 1970s before going into business consulting.
McMullen frequently worked as a teacher or adviser during his career, including as adjunct professor at the Harvard law and business schools. He was an advisor on issues involving crime and Social Security to Sen. Bill Bradley from 1993-1997.
Jack has lived in Vermont since the mid-1990s. He has served in the following capacities:
* Chairman of Governor Douglas’s Project to Advance Government Efficiency;
* Pro bono work for the Ruggles House, a shared senior housing facility in Burlington;
* Member of Committee on Foreign Relations;
* Board of Directors of the Greater Burlington Industrial Corporation;
* Board of Directors of Associated Industries of Vermont;
* Board of Directors of Vermont Council on Economic Education;
* Board of Directors of Ethan Allen Institute.
