The Best From the Best
NEWPORT CITY – If you smell the aroma of fresh baked goodies in the downtown area, there is good reason. It's probably coming from Jocelyn and Cinta’s Bake Shop at 167 Main Street. The storefront had many uses over the past several years or so, including another bakery and a Dunkin' Donuts.Owners Jocelyn Bourassa and Cinta Aherns took the shop over from Northeast Kingdom Community Action last August. The women bring their own established product lines to the business.“We do pretty much anything,” said Bourassa. “If you think it, we can make it.”Most recently, Aherns ran bakeries at the East Side Restaurant in Newport and Cinta’s Bake Shop in Derby, but for decades she's been known for her baking throughout the Northeast Kingdom. Four years ago, Vermont Life Magazine listed her as one of the top 10 best pie bakers. Bourassa got interested in baking while at the culinary program at the North Country Career Center. While in high school, she worked at the East Side Restaurant. From there she went to Johnson and Wales University, where she majored in Baking and Pastry Arts. Bourassa worked at various inns including Shaker Village, where she was a pastry chef. She was also the chef at NECAS’s bakery.Aherns and Bourassa offer high quality and fresh baked goods with no preservatives. They also pride themselves in using many local products. Their bakery provides baked goods for various restaurants and a few stores. Aherns and Bourassa offer special orders and specialty cakes as well. As their business grows, the co-owners may expand their product lines.Local woman Pam Greenwood, who provides customer service, is also part of the bakery's highly skilled staff.
