BFA Fairfax Takes Both Games Against Lake Region Ball Clubs

ORLEANS–Fairfax freshman fireballer Kayla Mathieu stymied Lake Region’s bats, tossing a no-hitter, while her teammates gave her more than enough support in a 20-1 schoolgirls softball game Wednesday night.
“Our first two games against them, they threw (senior pitcher) Ruby (Bushey), and we knew we could hit her,” said Ranger coach Matt Tinker. “We were actually pretty confident coming in. But we weren’t prepared for this girl (Mathieu). She was just phenomenal.”
The Rangers looked like they were going to get out of the first inning unscathed, defending Fairfax’ vaunted top of the lineup bunting game and getting two outs with two runners on base. But the Bullets then strung together five consecutive hits, and plated seven runs before the first frame was over.
Meanwhile, Mathieu was on cruise control from the outset, with a commanding fastball with movement, racking up 16 strikeouts before the day was over.
Lake Region’s Callie Cashin walked, stole second, stole third, and came home on a throwing error for LR’s only run in the 5th.
“It was the perfect storm for them. Their pitcher was on her game, and their offense was clicking on all cylinders. I’m not sure there’s a team in the state, Division 1 included, that could’ve beat them the way they were playing today. From a coaching standpoint, you hate to be one the wrong end of that score. From a fan of the game standpoint, you have to appreciate what they did today. All you can do is tip your hat to them, and move on to the next game.”
Fairfax remains undefeated at 11-0, while Lake Region drops to 4-7. The Rangers will host Peoples Academy, who they battled to a 10-9 contest in their previous meeting, on Saturday at 11:00.
Over on the baseball diamond BFA’s Zac Roy picked up the win for the Bullets as they topped the Rangers 11-5.
Matt Messier and Corey Whitten were both able to get to two hits against Roy, but it wasn’t enough to propel Lake Region to the win.
Isaac Miller took the loss for the home team.
The boys, now 2-7, will host Peoples on Saturday.
