DERBY â€“ The Border Motel might be going up for tax sale. Derby Tax Collector MaryAnn Tetreault said that owner Christina Barch of Granby, MA, owes taxes for two years, about $26,830, plus attorney's fees.
She said that Attorney Robert Chimileski is working on having a tax sale for the Border Motel Property as well as some residential parcels. The Border Motel property will probably go on the action block in one to two months.
Barch has not responded to the monthly notices the town sent to her, said Tetreault, who added the owner can pay back taxes up to the day of the sale. Even after that, she has one year to redeem the property and reclaim ownership.
The property has an assessed value of $648,600.
This is not the first time Barch owed taxes for the property. She owed back taxes April 8, 2010, but paid it May 20,2010.
Paul Norman, who identified himself as an assistant manager for the hotel, said he was not aware of the tax issue, but said the business is for sale and it is still open for business. Norman said they wonâ€™t know whatâ€™s happening for a week or two.
The Vermont Secretary of Stateâ€™s Office showed the Border Motelâ€™s Corporate information expired April 20, 2010.
The motel also houses a well known lounge, Hellbilly Hideaway. Co-owner Ira Morgan said he did not have information about the tax sale and that it would not affect his business.
Tetreault didnâ€™t have a contact number for Barch.
