NEWPORT CITY – Monday evening the city council decided to ask the planning commission to write a zoning bylaw that prohibits a medical marijuana dispensary in city limits. The planning commission will write the bylaw; the council has to approve it.
Last year the Vermont legislature passed a bill allowing four marijuana dispensaries in the state. The bill states, "Nothing shall prevent a municipality from prohibiting the establishment of a dispensary within its boundaries or from regulating the time, place, and manner of a dispensary operation through zoning or other local ordinances."
