NORTHFIELD–The Falcon hockey girls overcame a 1-0 first period deficit to defeat Northfield 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
A late arrival at the Kreitzberg Arena led to more first periods trouble for North Country, as the Marauders (2-4) went up 1-0, putting the Falcons once again behind the eight ball.
"It was one of those typical first periods that seem to be plaguing us as of late," said coach Claude Paul.
In the second the girls played a little better, but still could not find the back of the net, and headed into the third still down a goal.
The third period saw Paul do a little mixing and matching, shaking up his lines to try and find some offense.
It worked, as Jenna Moss, who continues to find a way to the puck in the net, took a nice pass from Emilie Paul, went around a defenseman, deked the goalie and buried the puck just after the NCU power-play expired to tie the game at 1-1.
"She just put her head down and made it happen," said Paul. "She has scored some big goals for us this season, and when she does, it really gives the team a lift."
Remember how last game the man advantage was the Falcons’ kryptonite?
This game it was just the opposite, as they went ahead on Corrina Cota's power-play goal, a beautiful tic-tac-toe set up that had Paul and Taylor Morley assisting on the tally.
Mikaella Doran played well in the nets for North Country, as she turned away fourteen shots in the win.
"We still have some things to work on, but if the team that showed up in the third can play consistently for all three periods, we could be very dominant," said Paul.
Paul also mentioned who well Emily Doty played in the game, citing the Northfield game as her best game in a NCU uniform to date.
The Falcons are currently second in the Lake Division, standing at 3-2, and after a 2012 that featured a very tough opening portion of the schedule, the girls will get a bit of break when they travel to face a struggling Woodstock team on Wednesday night at 6:45 to kick of the new year.
