COVENTRY - Today is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President of John F. Kennedy. To mark that historic event, a Coventry man is traveling to Boston to have close to 800 envelopes with JFK stamps hand canceled.
Yesterday, James Brasseur said he planned to leave his home at 3 a.m. today to be at the Dorchester Street post office at opening time. He is going to that specific post office because it has the longest hours, 6 a.m. until midnight.
Brasseur started collecting Kennedy stamps three years ago after lower back pain made him disabled.
â€śMy grandfather gave me a book that had a FDC,â€ť said Brasseur. â€śI was always curious to what it was and when I did, that peaked my interest.â€ť
FDC means first day cover. Brasseur explained on the first day a stamp comes out, the post office puts it on a pictured envelope, and cancels it. In Brasseurâ€™s case, the post office released the first day Kennedy cover in 1964,
