NEWPORT–UCA scored two goals in the opening fifteen minutes and never looked back, defeating Mid-Vermont 2-1 on Thursday.
"It was nice to get a win and break our tie streak," said coach Alyssa DeLaBruere. "I'm glad we scored early because we can rely on our defense to hold a lead."
Justin Limoge and Ji Kim teamed up for the contest's opening tally just ten minutes into the first.
Limoge found Kim, who let a bullet fly, beating goalie Austin Sayers.
"Overall I think we played as a team and guys were passing and trying to set each other up for a goal," said Kim.
Ji is a few games into his return from a knee injury and has been playing well as of late.
"It kind of hurts, but when you run you forget about it and focus on scoring," he replied when asked how the knee was holding up.
Jon DeLaBruere's bomb from the left side of the net five minutes later brought the Crusaders total up to two, as he went upper-right to fool Sayers.
Mid-Vermont got on the board twenty-eight minutes into the half.
Paul Samaan brought down a player inside the eighteen and a penalty kick was awarded thusly.
The visiting squad elected to have Joe Zhou take the kick and he converted, sending the ball about waist-high past UCA netminder Chris DeLaBruere.
That would be the end of the scoring for either team, and the half closed at 2-1 Crusaders.
In the second UCA controlled the majority of the action, but could not break through for another tally.
With Dale Martell now playing up top, he did an excellent job creating opportunities for his team.
Kim and Jon DeLaBruere were also up in the action, but the team was occasionally caught being a little indecisive with the ball, costing them a few scoring chances.
"I think it is something that we need to work on, and come Monday against Cabot, that is not going to work," said the coach.
The Crusaders best chance came on penalty-kick fifteen minutes into the second.
Chris sprinted up from his net, took the shot, which Sayer stopped, and then had to sprint back into his goal with the ball being live after the PK. He managed to get back without incident.
Mid-Vermont got down in the UCA zone a couple of times in the half, but never really had any good shots on the UCA frame.
Chris DeLaBruere finished the game with nine saves for the Crusaders (5-3-3), while Sayers finished with seven for Mid-Vermont (0-3).
"I'm really looking forward to the rest of our games and am pumped to go to the play-offs," said Kim looking ahead to the rest of the season.
Next on the schedule for UCA will be a date with Cabot at 6:30 on Monday night under the lights at Gardner Park.
