SWANTON–Finally.
After years of being on the losing end of games against the Missisquoi Valley Union Thunderbirds, the North Country Falcon field hockey team defeated the T-birds 4-1 on Monday afternoon to improve their record to 1-0-1.
"This win feels amazing," said NCU coach Chantelle Bouchard. "We have come so close in the past, and after losing to them in the play-offs the last two years, this win means a lot to both me, and all of the girls on the team."
It was a much different MVU team that the Falcons faced on Monday, as the T-Birds lost 12 seniors from last year due to graduation.
North Country assessed the situation, and then came out guns blazing in the first half, quickly jumping to the 1-0 lead on a goal by Brittany Fortier.
Morgan Greene and Brittany Royer joined in on the scoring to make it 3-0. Adrianna Fournier assisted on Greene's goal, while Fortier and Greene got the helpers on Royer's tally.
With time running out in the first, MVU's Kim Kosac, the only returning starter from the 2012 squad, ended any hopes of a Falcon shut-out, when she scored to make it 3-1 after 30 minutes.
In the second, the Falcons tacked on one more, as Fortier picked up her second goal of the game.
"Brittany (Fortier) had an excellent game for us today," said Bouchard. "She was in the right place at the right time, and she has taken her game to a new level so for this season."
Myrriah Gonyaw had 10 saves for the Falcons, while Veronica Cook-Vilburn stopped 8 for 0-3 MVU.
Next up for the Falcons, they will travel down I-91 for a showdown with Lyndon Institute this Thursday.
Game time is 4:00.
