NEWPORT CITY - Forty years ago Kathy McQuillen started working full-time at her parents’ business, Farrant’s Flower Shop, on Main Street in Newport City. To mark that the milestone, Newport resident Rick Desrochers, presented McQuillen with 40 balloons and gift certificates to local businesses.
Farrant’s Flowers Shop has been in the same Main Street storefront for 47 years. However, it most likely won’t make it to 48 years. The store is located in the Spates Block, which is slated to be razed next spring. McQuillen said the building owner, Doug Spates, gave them permission to remain in the block until the end of the year. The store will then moves to Farrant Street, the location of the business’ greenhouse.
