Funds Embezzled From Umpires Association

December 14, 2011

NEWPORT, VT - Scott Wing, 41 of Morgan, entered a not guilty plea Monday to a charge that he embezzled somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 from the Northern Umpires Association checking account for his own purposes.
On Sept. 21, Reginald Shafe told city police officers that he believed Wing had misappropriated the money. Shafe had been approached by Gary White, who shared responsibility with Wing for the association's account. White was concerned about discrepancies.
White told police that several of the umpires had complained about not being paid for part of the season. White then went to the bank and discovered that there was about $300 in the account.
Based on the amounts paid and the bank statement, police concluded that Wing had written a series of checks to himself or for his use totaling slightly more than $2600.
White and Jeff Cota, the league president, told police that umpires cover 306 games during the summer at $29 per game.
Sgt. Nick Rivers later spoke to Wing who reportedly admitted taking the money and said he had recently lost his job, was going through a tough time and planned to pay the money back. Wing had also umpired a total of 43 games and was owed $1553 for his work that summer.
Since then, Wing has reportedly repaid the funds.
