GUN ISSUE COMING TO TOWN MEETINGS

BARTON – The Northeast Kingdom hasn't escaped the fire ignited by the school shooting in Newtown, CT.
As states battle with weapon bans, clip limits, and late night gun legislation, both sides of the argument are circulating petitions in Orleans County.
A local group known as P.E.A.C.H. (Preserving Every American’s Constitutional Heritage) formed in direct response to the Newtown shootings. John Klar of Irasburg, a retired lawyer with a background in Constitutional Law, said that, after seeing petitions calling for communities to pass regulations banning certain weapons, he felt he had to do something. It is illegal for state and local governments to infringe on the American right to bear arms, Klar said. So his response was to petition against what he sees as an unconstitutional move.
A group called Communities Against Assault Weapons (C.A.A.W.) is circulating the petitions supporting new gun regulations.
Both groups hope the petitions will place the issue on Town Meeting agendas.
