NEWPORT–On a beautiful warm and sunny day, the North Country field hockey team played host to the Highlanders of Harwood for a rare Monday afternoon contest.
The Falcons played much better than in their previous outing against Spaulding, but still came out on the short side of the stick with a 4-0 loss.
"This is a much better game than Spaulding. They (Harwood) are a D2 team and we can walk off the field with nothing to complain about," said Coach Chantelle Bouchard.
The first half was a very even affair. Early on neither team seemed to have the strong advantage, although the Falcons did have the greater chances.
Harwood on the other hand was able to make the most of the chances that they were given, and it was Haley Spittle who had the hot Highlander hand as she tallied two first half goals for visiting squad.
Despite getting down, the Falcons continued to battle throughout the opening 30 minutes.
In the second half Harwood would continue their assault, playing a much more dominant half of field hockey, keeping the ball in the North Country end for long periods of time.
"I think they (the Falcons) were just tired," said Bouchard.
North Country had played the first half of the game shorthanded, as multiple players, including starting goaltender Danielle Gabucci, were late to the game due to a field trip.
Sophomore Myrriah Gonyaw, the J/V netminder, got her first career start, and had nine saves in the contest. Gabucci did get into the game and stopped three shots.
Spittle would get her third goal in the 2nd and Samantha Fox closed out the scoring for Harwood, bringing the final score to 4-0.
Megan Meany had the three save shut-out in the win.
Now the Falcons, who are hoping to end their current losing streak, will head to Stowe on Friday to square off against the team who eliminated them from the play-offs in cold rain soaked contest last season.
Game time is 4:00
