NEWPORT – High flu activity continues nationwide according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In Vermont, flu activity remains widespread with reports of high absenteeism among school age children in the Northeast Kingdom.
According to reports, three adults have died in Vermont from the flu this season so far and 14 adults have reportedly died in New Hampshire.
The last few years have seen mild flu seasons, but this year is different. The flu came on early and strong.
The good news is that, despite a critical nationwide shortage, North Country Hospital still has the flu vaccine.
People wishing to get a flu shot who don’t have a primary care physician can call North Country Occupational Medicine Clinic at 334-4191. Visit www.cdc.gov/flu or www.northcountryhospital.org for more information.
“We’re already seeing a lot of flu cases this year,” said Jean Holcomb, infection prevention coordinator with North Country Hospital. “Flu season is off to an early start, which means it could be a long one,” she said. “Each year, 36,000 people die of the flu in this country. Infants, older people, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk.”
