Jay Fire Ruled Arson, Burglary

April 30, 2012

JAY, VT - An early morning residential fire in Jay was apparently set to cover up a burglary, according to a report by the Vermont State Police.
The Jay Fire Department responded to the fire on VT RT 242 in Jay around 5:40 AM Monday. The residence is a rental property and no one was home at the time.
The owner of the building had put the fire out before the fire department arrived, however the fire flared up again once the building was ventilated. The fire department extinguished the blaze.
Fire damage was minimal and no injuries were reported.
While putting out the fire, firefighters noticed that the building appeared to have been burglarized. The Vermont State Police were called to investigate and determined that the building had deliberately been set on fire following a burglary. Someone had stolen several firearms from the residence.
The State Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Vermont Arson Tip Award Program at 1-800-32ARSON or the Derby State Police Barracks.
Damages were estimated at $10,000.
