NEWPORT CENTER – A rescue team is searching Lake Memphremagog for a man who fell through the ice and into the frigid waters while pulling an ice shanty behind a tractor.
The Vermont State Police Scuba Team, Newport Center Fire Department, and the U.S. Border Patrol spent much of Sunday searching the west side of the lake near McKinney Drive, off the Lake Road. By early evening, the search was temporarily suspended.
State Police received the call around 7:30 PM Saturday and no one knew at the time if anyone was in the shanty or on the tractor. Emergency personnel responded to the scene for a possible ice rescue.
