COVENTRY â Officials from the stateâs largest landfill are asking to increase the facilities tonnage from 2,500 tons to 5,000 tons a day, however the annual total tonnage would be limited to 600,000 tons.
The landfill is currently permitted to handle 370,000 tons.
âWeâre not looking to expand the landfill itself,â said John Gay, an engineer with New England Waste Services of Vermont (NEWS). âWeâre looking to increase the tonnage that we take at the facility.â
Given the acreage at the site now, the life expectancy of the landfill would be reduced from 14 years to 9 years, approximately. Gay said it depends on the compaction and the amount of settlement they get.
NEWSVT has no current plans to buy additional land, but it does have land it could expand to if necessary. Gay doesnât know how much of the land would be eligible for landfill use.
