NEWPORT-Wednesday was a bittersweet day for North Country tennis coach Gary Atchinson, as he coached in what will likely be his final home game of his 14 year career as the North Country boys tennis coach as his team took on the Montpelier Solons.
Said Atchinson about the moment, "I have been here forty-four years teaching some kind of tennis... We said it was the last match for the seniors and the last match for me as well and it was very significant.
"There is no doubt I will miss it, but it just feels like it's time to move on."
As for the match itself, it was close and could have gone either way, but in the end it was the number two doubles pair of Ben Fiend and Karyka Taylor from Montpelier besting Ian Major and Nathan Grimm 6-3, 6-4 that gave the Solons the 4-3 win in the last regular match of the regular season.
"I basically saw a lot of positive things," said Atchinson. "You can't always control winning and losing, but you can control the effort you put in and they came up with a huge effort I thought."
