DERBY – The Family Dollar Store, with locations in Newport City and Orleans, is expanding its Northeast Kingdom territory once again. This time the company is opening a store on US RT 5, across from McDonald’s.
The store will be in a new building on property owned by Jim Mulkin.
The new store will be about 8,000 square feet, the same as the store on Main Street in Orleans. The store in downtown Newport is 10,000 square feet.
Bryn Winburn, public relations manager of Family Dollar Stores Inc., said the store is scheduled to open within the first six months of 2013. Neither store in Newport City or Orleans will close even though both are located within 15-minutes or so of each other.
“We are a neighborhood store and serve the needs of the families in the immediate vicinity of our stores,” she stated in an e-mail. “It’s not uncommon to have Family Dollar Stores within a mile or two of one another.”
Each store within the company has eight to ten employees. The company uses “sophisticated modeling software” and real estate personnel to choose locations.
Winburn said the company does not sell over-runs or seconds.
The new location will also be open for Village Pizza. Josh Lavallee, who will buy the new location, said there are plans to open in late January, providing there are no problems. Once open, the 2,800 square foot restaurant will have seating for 74 people. It will offer a limited area delivery service. The restaurant will have televisions and wireless Internet access.
