NEWPORT CITY - An apartment building fire on Central Street in Newport City Thursday displaced the three families that lived there. Firefighters from Newport City, Derby Line, and Newport Center responded to the blaze shortly after 1 p.m.
Newport City firefighter Steve Edgerley said he could see the smoke from the fire near Strawberry Acres in Newport Center.
Memphremagog Rentals owns the building, across the street from the VFW Alfred Pepin Post 798. Doug Spates, of the rental business, said each unit had families living in them. Shortly after the fire broke out, Spates said two of the families talked about spending the night with family members and he had not spoken to the third family.
