SOUTH BURLINGTON-The third tournament of the golf season found two girls from North Country Union High School, and two girls for the Newport Country Club Junior program traveling to the Vermont National Country Club on Wednesday.
The high school was represented by Captain Paige Gagnon and Tanika Demers while the Newport Club was represented by eighth grader Katie Goulet and seventh grader Carley Giroux, both girls come from a long line of golfers.
The National CC is known for its great fairways and greens, and difficult roughs.
Unfortunately it was the latter that snagged up Tanika on the second hole.
Said Tanika, “I had some great shots for me, and that made up for it.” She shot a 70 for the day.
That was the same score for Carley, with several tough holes “messing up my really good holes.”
Katie Goulet shot a very respectable 53, according to her coach Brian Hampton, but Goulet was not pleased with her results.
“My driver was terrible”, she said.
This was the first time for Tanika, Carley and Katie playing on this course.
Paige played at VNCC last year and improved her score by four strokes. “What really saved me was my putting. I had four one putts, and ended up averaging two putts per hole.”
“As all golfers know, that is very acceptable,” commented coach Hampton.
The girls played in Enosburg on Thursday, and will be at home on Monday at 12:00.
