DERBY – A new restaurant is planned for Derby. The owners of two Newport restaurants are joining forces to open Jr’s Wood Grill in the Price Chopper shopping center.
Scott Shipley owns Habanero’s Mexican Grille on Main Street in Newport and is joining with Richard DeLarenzo of Junior’s on Main Street. Junior’s will close, but Habanero’s future is uncertain. Shipley may have the restaurant managed by someone else or sell it.
Jr’s Wood Grill’s other owners are Lisa Shipley and Jonathan Webb.
Scott Shipley and DeLarenzo announced their plans to the Derby Select Board as they are hoping for the board’s blessing, Shipley said. He also noted that even though the restaurant will have a bar, it is planned as a family style restaurant.
Plans include using local products as much as possible. A variety of foods including Mexican, Italian, and American will be served. The new partners said they plan on offering affordable selections and a welcoming atmosphere for friends and families.
The owners have signed a lease agreement but are waiting on the select board's decision for water and sewer allocation. The owners will also need a local zoning permit, a sign permit and, when they are ready to move in, a Certificate of Occupancy.
