DERBY – An online petition is circulating asking Gov. Peter Shumlin to not allow Walmart to build in Derby.
As of Sunday, more than 1,200 people had signed the petition.
Chairman of the Derby Select Board Brian Smith criticized the effort and said most who have signed it are not from Orleans County and some are from out of state.
The petition against Walmart is at Change.org and was started by Emily Donaldson of Reading, VT. Its title is “Gov. Peter Shumlin: Stand with Vermonters instead of Walmart.” Donaldson writes about the intimacy of knowing your neighbors and the local shop owners and the trust that creates in rural Vermont. This trust includes the way businesses deliver their goods and services, she continues.
