NEWPORT–In a match they had to win, the Prouty Beach 2’s of the USTA 4.0 Senior Women’s League came through with a 2-1 win over the White River Junction Volley Dolls on Sunday afternoon.
“Well, we did it. We finished with an 8-2 record and have qualified to go to Sectionals in South Hadley, Massachusetts,” said Co-Captain Petey Johnson.
Johnson, along with her doubles partner Ann O’Brien were up 5-4 in their first set when one of the Volley Dolls succumbed to heat sickness and was forced to withdraw from the match giving the 2’s a 1-0 lead.
Louis Loomis and Sherry Hadden, two of the mid-season imports for Newport, fell 6-4, 6-4 in the number one doubles slot, leaving it up to the number two duo of Gillian Staniforth and Lyne Smithers, who had the largest margin of victory when they won 6-3, 6-2.
Next up is a month of rest and practice before the squad heads down South Hadley for the New England Sectionals on August 19-21.
