Ray’s Market Comes to Newport

NEWPORT CITY – For 39 years, many people have known Ray’s Market in Irasburg for its quality meats and friendly atmosphere. Now owner, Leo Piette has expanded the reputation and opened a new store on Route 105 in Newport, on Highland Avenue.
Piette opened the new store last week. He said he wanted to expand its operations outside Irasburg. “We have people from all over coming to buy our meat,” Piette said.
Some visitors with second homes in the region return home with a supply of meat with them.
In addition, Piette had frequent customers from places as Newport, Burke and Cambridge. Piette said he has one of only a few full service meat counters in the area.
Piette had been considering opening a second store for about two years. The Newport store is significantly smaller than the one in Irasburg. The role of the Newport store is to service customers who need to buy items for lunch and dinner. Piette tries to keep his prices at least equivalent to large food chains.
Piette doesn’t sell beer, because he doesn’t want customers to think of the store as a mini-mart.
“I want them to see us as a fresh food store,” he said. “A full deli, full produce counter and we have many dairy products.”
“We’re here to serve Newport to the best of our ability,” said Piette. “To give people high quality meat at the best possible price.”
Ray’s Market in Newport will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The store is closed Sundays.
