CRAFTSBURY–The Craftsbury Academy Lady Chargers hosted the Rochester Rockets on Saturday afternoon. It was the Chargers first game of the season and they were looking to show off the tools they had worked on during the preseason.
The Lady Chargers got on the board early as Deidre Martin took the pass from Meghan Pennock, and made it 1-0 in favor CA. The lead would be short lived as Rochester would tie the game with just over 13 minutes remaining in the 1st half. The teams would enter the half with the scored tied 1-1.
Already playing with an injury depleted bench, 1st year Coach, Ashley Maxfield, was forced to enter the 2nd half, with only 10 players due to a funeral.
The loss of players really took the wind out of the Lady Chargers sails. They continued to battle throughout the remainder of the contest, but with 17 minutes remaining the half the Rockets would strike again and go up 2-1. The Rochester would tally one more goal with 5 minutes remaining in the game, to secure the 3-1 victory.
Coach Maxfield was pleased with her team’s effort, even though the scoreboard was not in her favor. “We lost some girls to a funeral, so we played the 2nd half with only ten, and that is really hard to do. I was really impressed however with the teams will and effort. My rookie goalie [Emma Spiese] played outstanding today and made some awesome saves. This was her first ever game in goal. Deirdre Martin, scored our only goal, and showed a lot of leadership. The team has a whole played really well. I was quite excited with how my seniors stepped their game up. Meghan Pennock did very well and I am quite excited she is only a sophomore. Olivia Jones, my lone 8th grader, is definitely hanging tough. It’s just really tough playing with no subs and only 10 girls.”
The Lady Chargers will look to pick up that first win of the season when the host the team from Chelsea on Thursday, September 15th. Game time is 4:30.
