BASEBALL
MVU 8, NCU 1
NEWPORT–Missisquoi scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating North Country on Thursday afternoon.
Wyatt Prue took the loss for the Falcons, Nick Sicard had two hits and Chase LaCourse drove in the lone NCU run.
Sophomore Bryce Carter got his first taste of pitching at the varsity level, working four innings of relief.
On Friday, the Falcons fell again by the same 8-1 score, this time to South Burlington.
That elusive first win of 2013 keeps running away from the Falcons, but they will take another crack at it on Thursday, hosting Milton at 4:30.
Danville 3, LRU 0 (9)
ORLEANS–Dustin Bathalon struck out 11 batters through 8 innings for the Rangers, but a 3 run top of the ninth sealed the deal for Danville, as they picked up the win in extra frames.
The Rangers move to 4-2 with the loss, and will host BFA Fairfax on Tuesday.

GOLF
NEWPORT–The Falcons hosted their first match of the season on Thursday afternoon, but it was the Hilltoppers of St. Johnsbury coming away with the win with a team score of 322.
MVU finished second, coming in to the clubhouse at 410.
North Country will feature a small, young team this season, and on this day, the three golfers, sophomore Evan Clark and freshmen Isaiah Carbonneau and Eric Gavin, all came to play.
Clark was tops for NCU with an 89, followed by Carbonneau with a 107, and Gavin a 121.
St. J's Alex Rainville medaled with a 74.
The boys return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Barre at host Spaulding's event.
ST. JOHNSBURY–On Thursday the North Country Union High School girls golf team competed in their second tournament at the St. Johnsbury Country Club.
The seven team event had junior Paige Gagnon and sophomore Tanika Demers representing NCUHS again.
It was a special day for Tanika, getting her very first par.
It occurred on the par 3, third hole. Using her seven iron, she hit 120 yards to the middle of the green. This was a challenging shot, downhill with water hazards on either side. She reported that the two putts were easy.
Tanika shot a 67 for the day.
Paige’s game had some great tee shots, but had several difficult holes when they drifted off the fairways.
"This is Paige’s second season and she has improved immensely since last year, scoring 19 strokes better than last year on this course," said coach Brian Hampton.
Next event is Wednesday at Vermont National in South Burlington.
The 28th NCUHS Girls tournament is home on Monday May 13th starting at noon. Spectators are welcome.
