NEWPORT–Nineteen first quarter points combined with some tenacious defense fueled the UCA boys, as they defeated Masse Vanier in an international contest Monday afternoon at the Newport municipal building.
“It is a different kind of game on such a small court,” said UCA coach Tony DeLaBruere. “This win was because of the stellar defense in the 1st half, holding them to 9 pts.”
Marquel Taylor-Webster had his best game of the season, scoring 24 points and grabbing 20 rebounds while disrupting many shots in the paint.
Paul Saaman and Chris DeLaBruere were also in double-digits, Paul with 14 and Chris with 10.
Now at 6-1, the boys will take on Cabot at the Newport elementary school on Saturday at 2:30.
The girls were also in action against Masse Vanier, but fell short in their quest for their 3rd W, dropping their game 59-31.
Masse Vanier dominated early, but the Crusaders second half performance was inspiring.
“Our defense was a lot stronger and we communicated better,” said coach Molly Smith. “We ended the game with a good feeling as we head into Saturday’s game.”
The girls, now 2-5, will be up first in the doubleheader with Cabot, taking the floor for a 1:00 start.

ESSEX-The North Country boy’s hockey team had a very convincing win over the MMU Cougars on Wednesday, as they piled up four first period goals en-route to a 7-3 victory.
“The guys went out and did what they had to do and it was a good win,” said coach Andrew Roy.
Ross DeLaBruere refuses to slow down, and this time out he had a six point night, tallying four goals and two assists.
“Ross had a great night and could have had more if we needed him to,” said Roy.
Also scoring for the Falcons were Adam Viens, Ryan Paul and Devin Tetreault.
Paul had two assists in the contest and Viens one.
North Country got some good play from their younger guys Pat Tetreault, Andrew Gonyaw, Ryan O’Donnell and Travis Tetreault.
With Logan Fortier out with the flu bug that is going around, Viens spent the night on the blue line, and was once again selfless in his service on the ice.
Chase LaCourse was between the pipes for the 6-1 Falcons, and made twelve saves.
Next up on the schedule is a meeting with MVU at the Ice Haus on Saturday night.
