SCHOOL CHOICE CHANGES

NEWPORT - Vermont's School Choice law, first enacted in 2000, has been amended this past legislative session to clarify capacity guidelines and set a uniform date to make annual capacity determinations.
Prior to the changes, a school district could establish formal agreements with area school districts to allow students to attend a school outside their home district. NCUHS has such an arrangement with both Canaan High School and Lake Region Union High School, allowing up to 15 students between the schools combined to transfer to North Country.
The new statutes establish transfer limits for schools based on grades 9-12 enrollment as of October 1st. A cap of 10% or 40 students, whichever is smaller, are the minimum limits a school can accept from other school districts.
The transfer limits for Lake Region will be set at 30, and Canaan High School will have a limit of 10 students. The new cap will go into effect in school year 2014/15.
