NEWPORT CITY – Just a few miles from the US/Canadian border Senator Bernie Sanders addressed roughly 100 local senior citizens about such topics as Medicare and the cost of pharmaceuticals in the United States compared to Canada.
Sanders, who is a member of the Democratic Leadership, has worked with lawmakers on a variety of issues such as constituents not getting responses from the Social Security Administration in a timely matter because of underfunding and staffing issues that said that lawmakers recently increased funding by $480 million.
Lawmakers also worked to strengthen the Veteran’s Administration that has a hospital in White River Junction, as well as outreach clinics. Sanders said unlike some lawmakers said, he does not feel the best way to balance the national budget is to make cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. However, he would like to abolish the cap some of the wealthy pay into the Social Security Trust Fund. Sanders also wondered how some people get by with an income as low as $12,000 to $13,000 a year.
