NEWPORT CITY – Alex Tabor, 32, of Newport, was arrested by Newport City Police Monday after he allegedly fired off a shotgun within city limits. Tabor is scheduled to be arraigned today.
City police responded to the intersection of Pleasant and Third streets just before 1 AM Monday after receiving a complaint that Tabor had fired a gun over someone's head. Someone driving by at the time reported that their vehicle may have been hit but no injuries were reported.
"It was definitely a volatile situation," Officer David Jacobs said. "You know we're responding to shots fired in the area... there's a church there, there's a day care there. It happened on that end of Third Street and then it ended up at the top end of Third Street."
Jacobs said police responded quickly and Tabor was taken into custody at his residence without incident.
The area is heavily populated.
As of Tuesday, Police didn’t know if Tabor owned the gun or what his motive was. The Orleans County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.
Police lodged Tabor on $100,000 bail.
