NEWPORT CENTER, VT - Police arrested a Derby man after he allegedly used his vehicle to ram the personal vehicle of an off duty police officer before leading police on a high speed chase.
Police said that early Wednesday morning, Brent McClure, 23, of Derby, targeted Newport City Police Officer Richard Wells' personal vehicle. McClure rammed Wells' vehicle several times along VT RT 105, causing Wells to temporarily lose control of his vehicle.
Newport City Police, Vermont State Police, and Border Patrol Agents attempted to stop McClure in Newport Center. McClure did not stop and lead police on a high speed chase through Newport Center, Newport City, and Derby.
Police found McClure's vehicle on the Schuler Road in Derby. McClure fled into the woods on foot but police soon found him.
Charges against McClure include aggravated assault, attempting to elude, driving with license criminally suspended, driving while intoxicated, and gross and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
McClure is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 30.
