NEWPORT CITY - A 2011 youth risk behavior study showed Vermont has one of the highest rates for underage drinking in the country, and Orleans County ranks one of the highest counties in the state.
In an effort to lower those statistics, HealthWorks for Orleans-Northern Essex counties will hold a public forum tonight, Tuesday, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The event will be at the Gateway Center in Newport City. Speakers will include teenagers and representatives of local organizations. Michael Nerney, a consultant in Substance Abuse and Education from Long Lake N.Y. will be the keynote speaker.
Prevention Collation Coordinator Lesley Becker for Orleans-Northern Essex Counties Health Works said her organization wants to create a more healthy community, which includes changing the social norm for underage drinking.
“The way to do that is to talk about it and let the community know it’s even a problem,” said Becker. “When something is a social norm, it’s something that’s expected.”
