NEWPORT CITY- In 1989 owners of a hardware store, The Pick and Shovel, decided to open an ice cream stand. At first the idea wasn't universally approved; Greg Hamblett recalls that when the stand first opened people told Tim and Doug they were “nuts.” Twenty four years later the iconic stand is a popular meeting place, not just for ice cream, but people to meet and socialize.
