ORLEANS – Senior day is a special occasion for any high-school athlete. It is the day that they get recognized and get the respect paid to them that they deserve for their 4 years of service.
As the Lake Region Lady Rangers hosted the Richford Rockets Saturday morning, Lake Region’s 6 seniors would get their opportunity to be recognized by their coach, families and friends. This year’s seniors are Desirae Colorado, Callie Cashin, Miranda Beaudry, Cailyn Gallup, Kaitlyn Wright and Hannah Dean. Coach Brad Urie on his seniors, “this is my first class that I have seen all the way through from freshman to seniors; they are a very special group of kids.”
As for the game, the Rangers came out on fire and played a full 80 minutes of soccer en-route to a 6-0 victory. Freshman Tyrah Urie entered the game with 14 goals on the season, 3 shy of tying Abbey Lalime’s single season goal record of 17, set in 2006 and it wouldn’t take her long to tie then break the record, as she scored 5 goals on the day.
The Blue and White came out strong from the first whistle as Urie and Tori Adams worked a give and go through the Rocket defense, that Adams would shoot wide. 19 minutes into the first half Urie struck for her first goal of the contest after taking a feed from Hannah Dean, giving the Lady Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Callie Cashin and Caitlyn Bernier have been playing big minutes for Coach Urie, and they both had chances throughout the first half.
A Kaitlyn Wright pass would set up Urie for her 2nd goal of the game with 6 minutes to go in the first half.
Jordan Cowles started in net for the Lady Rangers and made 2 saves in the first half, but she was replaced by Brooke Breault at the start of the second half. Coach Brad Urie said the decision was made to get both girls playing time.
10 minutes into the 2nd half it looked as if Urie was going tie the record, but her shot was deflected wide by the Richford keeper Emily Germain, and right onto the waiting foot of Corrina Cota, who notched her first goal of the season, giving LR a 3-0 lead.
But, this day belonged to Miss Urie and at the midway point of the 2nd half she would go untouched through the Richford defense, scoring her 3rd goal of the game, tying the record with her 17th goal of the year. The tie wouldn’t last long though, as five minutes after tying the record, Cashin would cross the ball from the right side of the pitch and Urie would one-time it into the back of the net, giving her 4 for the game and 18 on the year.
Amber Bernier, who recently returned from an injury, fed Urie with a nice pass through the Richford defense and Urie, as she had done 18 previous times, put the ball into the back of the net, giving her 5 for the game, 19 on the season, and pushing the Lady Rangers lead to 6-0.
With 5 minutes left in regulation, Coach Urie removed his seniors from the game, and the crowd acknowledged them with a standing ovation.
Cowles and Breault would combine on the 3 save shutout for LR.
“That was a big bounce back win after losing to Oxbow. The intensity that we brought to this game, is the intensity that we need to bring for the rest of the season,” Coach Urie said after the game. When asked about Tyrah’s record breaking day, he was all smiles, “I was very pleased for her to get that individual achievement. The old record was 17 and this was a big day for her. But, it wasn’t just an individual effort, it was a team achievement. She couldn’t have done it without the rest of the team.”
With the win the Lady Rangers improve to 8-4-1 on the season, and with 1 game to go, they sit 7th in the Division 2 standings, keeping them in line to start the playoffs in Orleans. The Lady Rangers will close out their regular season on the road, Wednesday against the BFA-Fairfax Bullets. This will be a rematch of the double-overtime thriller won by Lake Region, back in September. Kickoff is set for 4:00
